Poker Star Profile: Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan

November 14, 2009

  • Legendary online player
  • One of the world’s best high-stakes ring game players
  • Over $1.1 million in Career Tournament Earnings

Tom Dwan, better known by the online player handle “durrrr“, is a living legend of online poker. One of the most prolific players in the history of the game, few people (if any) have put in more hours or made more money playing poker on the internet.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Dwan discovered online poker while he was a student at Boston University. He started off by playing small stakes Sit & Gos and then, when he found he could beat those games quite easily, moved on to playing ring games. Within no time, he had graduated to the highest levels of play available online, routinely taking on the world’s best poker players.

While best known for his play on the digital felt, Dwan has already established himself as one of the world’s best live high-stakes ring game players, as well as a formidable tournament player who has earned more than $1 million in prize money. His tournament successes include three World Series of Poker cashes, a 9th place finish at the 2009 National Heads-Up Poker Championship and a 4th place finish at the 2007 World Poker Tour Main Event in Foxwoods Casino.

Durr Challenge

Dwan is also a staple of poker television shows. He has appeared numerous times on Poker After Dark, High Stakes Poker and Full Tilt Poker’s Million Dollar Cash Game, where he won a pot worth more than $1.1 million – the largest in televised poker history.

In January of 2009, Dwan issued what has become known as the “durrrr Challenge” to the poker world. He offered to put up $1.5 million to any opponent’s $500K, playing heads-up online at four tables simultaneously for 50,000 hands. After the last hand is finished, the player who has earned more money wins the challenge.

First to accept the durrrr Challenge was Team Full Tilt’s Patrik Antonius. When these two titans of high-stakes poker finish their 50,000 hands, both Phil Ivey and David Benyamine are in line to accept the challenge and take on Dwan.

Even when he’s not playing in the durrrr Challenge, you can usually find Dwan sitting at the high-stakes No-Limit Hold ‘em and Pot Limit Omaha tables. Look for Tom “durrrr” Dwan online at Full Tilt Poker.

Playing poker has its hazards! There are two types players that one should watch out for and try to stay clear of. The Shark and the Donkey! The Shark: The shark is very dangerous. This player is the classic example of the top of the food chain waiting to take advantage of the weakness of lesser poker players. Dealing with a shark is very easy. Stay away from them and stick to shallow waters ie. small stake games. But don't be fooled, smaller, less well know sharks still lurk in these waters. Characteristics of a Shark Usually wait at a table for players to come to them Plays very few hands When they play, they play aggressively Usually win the hands that they play The Donkey If the shark is dangerous, then the donkey is leather. Technically speaking, the donkey has no concept of the what poker is about. These players are gamblers and enjoy the thrill of the chase. Unfortunately, the donkeys get lucky every now and then and usually deliver the worst bad beats imaginable. Dealing with a donkey is pretty straight forward. Select your hand very carefully, and when you have the nuts then punish the donkey with strong/clever betting. Characteristics of a Donkey Usually plays too many hands Plays a range of stakes, mid to highs stakes Always limping in and flat calls bets Hit there cards on the river Surviving the Donkeys and the Sharks is a stressful affair but once your poker scope is set, then pick on the weakness of these players. Be clever, play within your bankroll and keep on learning.
